Viking Range Igniter Keeps Clicking — Causes & Safe Fixes
A Viking range that clicks nonstop is the single most common cooking call we run in Pleasant Hill — and it splits into two very different situations: clicking with no flame (the burner never lights) and clicking that continues after the flame is lit. The cause, and the right response, depends on which one you have.
Clicking with no flame
The igniter sparks, but gas never ignites. In order of likelihood:
- A wet burner — a spill or boil-over in the last day or two. Water shorts the spark path. Fix: remove the cap, wipe everything dry, and give it up to 24 hours. This resolves a surprising share of these calls.
- A mis-seated burner cap — caps knocked off-center during cleaning disrupt the flame pattern and the spark gap. Re-seat it: it should sit flat with no rock.
- Clogged burner ports — the small holes around the burner head plug with residue. A soft brush clears them; pins and needles enlarge them, don’t.
- A weak or cracked igniter — the ceramic cracks or the spark weakens. This is the replacement case, and it’s a contained one.
Clicking after the flame lights
The burner is burning, but the sparking continues — sometimes across all burners at once. That’s downstream of the burner itself: a soiled or failing spark switch in the harness, or the spark module. One useful test before you call: if wiggling or lifting the knob slightly stops the clicking, the switch is the suspect, not the module. Tell us that detail — it changes what we bring.
When to stop and call
Stop immediately if you smell gas beyond a brief whiff at ignition, if a burner won’t shut off, or if clicking comes with visible sparking anywhere under the cooktop.
