Before you call — three quick checks
- Clean the filter, and look at what comes out. A filter that has not been cleaned in a year explains poor drainage, poor cleaning and long cycles simultaneously. It is the cheapest repair there is.
- Check the air gap at the sink. When water backs up at the air gap the fault is frequently downstream of the dishwasher entirely — a partially blocked disposal or drain line.
- Note which cycles leak. A leak that appears only on longer or hotter cycles points somewhere quite different from one that appears every time, and telling us which saves diagnostic time.
What a service visit includes
Diagnosis is by measurement rather than replacement: fill and drain behaviour timed against spec, heating verified at the element rather than inferred from dry dishes, and the wash circuit checked for restriction. Leaks are traced to the source before anything is sealed — door gasket, pump seal, hose connection and inlet valve all put water in the same place, and only one of them is the actual fault.
Water hardness deserves a mention here. Contra Costa Water District supplies hard water, and scale on a heating element is a slow insulator — longer cycles and poorer drying arrive years before anything that looks like a failure. If your machine has a rinse aid and salt regime that has drifted, we will say so rather than sell you a part.
FAQ
Why are my glasses suddenly cloudy?
Two very different causes look identical. Mineral film wipes off with a vinegar rinse; etching does not, because the glass surface itself has been damaged, and that is permanent. Establishing which one you have determines whether this is a repair, a detergent change, or neither.
There is always a little water in the bottom. Is that normal?
A small amount in the sump is by design and keeps seals from drying out. Enough to cover the filter is not, and it usually means drainage is partially restricted rather than failed — which is worth catching before it becomes a pump.
Is a twelve-year-old Viking dishwasher worth repairing?
Usually yes, and that is not a sales answer. Components are individually serviceable and parts support holds up, so a fault that would total a mass-market machine is routine here. Where it stops being worth it, we will tell you.
